The Juice Bros (started in 1992) were a sister band to Sublime. Starting before and continuing during and after Sublime, they were known for their obscene song themes and the unorganized live performances. Getting their name from a group of brothers who sold PCP in their neighborhood, The Juice Bros preformed a more raw street punk sound, opposite from what Sublime was known for. As previously stated The Juice Bros were a somewhat active band from the early 80s through late 90s playing one off shows and having most of their music released on Skunk Records' Samplers, and a 12" LP.
*Rolling Stone Article January 15, 1997:

Six hours of memories, music and moshing marked the Enough Already Sublime Rock 'N' Roll Benefit show at the Hollywood Palladium Saturday night. Peers, bandmates and fans of Sublime showed up for hip up and comers like fluf, Ziggens, Voodoo Glowskulls, and of course, for headliners No Doubt. But the underlying theme -- to raise scholarship money for late Sublime singer Bradley Nowell's son, Jakob, and for the Musician's Assistance Program (MAP), was not forgotten.

As might be expected, the first couple of acts, Slightly Stoopid, All Day and Filibuster, who each played 15-minute sets starting at 6 p.m. sharp, plied their trade to a half-full house. But by the time fluf, Ziggens (who are on Sublime's record label, Skunk) and Orange County scene staples the Vandals took the stage, the Palladium was a virtual teen rock fest eager to become one with the trendy, in-crowd South Bay/Orange County music scene.

Pennywise, with a positive, fluid sound leaning more to straight rock than a real ska or punk vibe, stirred things up with the appropriate tunes "Fight 'Til U Die" and an amazing, punked-up version of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me." Pennywise, who like Sublime, has endured the passing of a bandmember, were particularly adamant about the evening's theme, with PW singer Jim railing to the photographers in the front row: "This isn't a media event, it's about something!" before closing with the Circle Jerks' cover "Live Fast, Die Young."

The Long Beach Dub Allstars, a project featuring Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh of Sublime, found fans for their mellow reggae grooves and the Sublime tune "Pawn Shop," though many in the young crowd didn't seem to realize that a rather subdued H.R. from the Bad Brains was guesting on several songs.

A 20-minute Sublime mini-movie was moving and surprisingly well received, reminding the audience and participants of the lost talents of Bradley Nowell, as well as Sublime's kick-back SoCal lifestyle and musical gifts, as the past-Gold sales of Sublime's self-titled major-label debut have now shown.

While there was a dearth of the usual Gwen-o-philes at the Palladium, No Doubt's engaging ska and endless energy was the ideal capper to a long and surprisingly varied night. Gwen Stefani's coltish, coquettish persona was cutesy but truly charismatic, while the endlessly skanking horn and keyboard players incited the crowd to manic proportions.

"Spiderweb," "Don't Speak" and "Just a Girl" were included, but when nearly the entire evening's cast of musical characters joined No Doubt for a marvelous rendition of the Beatles "Ob La Di, Ob La Da" -- a tune that lends itself easily to ska influences -- and Brad Nowell's beloved Dalmatian, Lou, made an onstage appearance, it was a poignant moment of pleasure and sadness. As the Beatles wrote, "Ob la di, ob la da ... life goes on," but sadly, not for Brad

Miguel Happoldt is an American musician who worked most notably with the US rock/reggae groups Sublime and Long Beach Dub Allstars, as well as co-founding the Skunk Records record label. He also played in the supergroup Volcano with ex-Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh after LBDA's split in 2002, under the pseudonym 'Mike Stand'.

Miguel joined Sublime after meeting Bradley Nowell through his associations with The Ziggens, after offering to use his free recording time (gained through his college course in sound engineering) to record the band. Originally joining as guitarist, the band made the decision to switch him to the position of producer and manager a short while later.

During his stint with the Long Beach Dub Allstars, Miguel played guitar, as well as producing both the band's studio albums.

Other notable artists that Miguel has produced tracks for include Unwritten Law, Slightly Stoopid, and Shortbus.

Following Bradley Nowell's 1996 death, his dalmatian, Lou Dog, was cared for by Michael. Lou Dog died on September 17, 2001.

Album Information
40 Oz. to Freedom is the 1992 debut ska punk album by the Southern California rock band Sublime. 40 Oz. to Freedom received mixed critical reviews upon its first release, but is now generally approved of as a sincere and brilliant record. Sublime would not achieve any mainstream success until two weeks after the overdose death of its leader singer and guitarist, Bradley Nowell, in 1996. When this album was recorded, Nowell had not yet begun using heroin. To some degree, the failure of 40 Oz. to Freedom to sell well or earn the band a major label release caused a despondent Nowell to begin using heroin. When the band recorded their next album, Robbin' the Hood, they did so in a Long Beach, California crackhouse.

40 Oz. to Freedom is one of the most popular albums released in the Third Wave of Ska Revival. Its sound blended various forms of Jamaican music, including ska ("40 Oz To Freedom"), rocksteady ("5446-That's My Number", cover of Toots & the Maytals), roots reggae ("Smoke Two Joints", a cover of The Toyes) and dub ("Let's Go Get Stoned", "D.J.s") with British and American hardcore punk ("New Thrash"), hip hop ("D.J.s") and folk music ("Rivers Of Babylon" a Melodians cover, "Scarlet Begonias", a Grateful Dead cover).

In 1995, Sublime sent a radio CD to the influential radio station KROQ, and one of 40 Oz. to Freedom's songs, "Date Rape", became the most requested song on the station, leading the album to appear at #1 for five weeks on Billboard magazine's (North America) Pacific Region chart, and to appear on the Alternative Artist Albums Chart for fifty weeks. The band then signed with MCA Records, which, along with the birth of his son, convinced Nowell to voluntarily enter rehab. Though he remained clean for several months, Nowell died of a heroin overdose shortly before the release of Sublime's breakthrough album, Sublime.

On the original release, "Rivers of Babylon", a folky religious song originally by The Melodians, and the outro, "Thanx", were hidden tracks.

On the original pressing of the album, which was distributed independently by Skunk Records, there were two additional songs. Get Out! appeared as the second track, and the theme from Rawhide was included on the same track as Date Rape. Also, there were some samples included in We're Only Gonna Die and "Let's Go Get Stoned. Both tracks and the samples had to be removed for national distribution due to copyright issues.

The album has six covers: "Smoke Two Joints" (by The Toyes), "We're Only Gonna Die" (by Bad Religion), "5446" (by Toots & the Maytals), "Scarlet Begonias" (by Grateful Dead), "Rivers of Babylon" (by The Melodians), and "Hope" (by the Descendents).

The album ranked at #10 for Top 100 Albums of 1992 and #402 for overall by Rate Your Music.

Trivia
*On the original release of 40 oz. to Freedom there was 23 tracks (2½ more then you can get on the current release of this CD). It had "Get Out!" and "Rawhide" (added to the end of Date Rape, and the songs Let's Go Get Stoned and We're Only Gonna Die for Our Own Arrogance had samples removed. Thanx was also a couple of minutes longer as well. This version is long out of print, making way for the new print. The original press of this album is extremely rare, so finding copies of it are nearly impossible.
Doin' Time is Sublime's most atypical track, which features DJ work by Field Marshall Goodman (who was Sublime's drummer for a brief period of time during the 40 oz. to Freedom years). This track also lends itself well to remixes, seeing as it has been remixed no less than eight times by artists such as Wyclef Jean, Mad Lion, the Pharcyde, Marshall Goodman himself, and fellow Long Beach artist Snoop Dogg.

This song contains a sample from "Slow and Low" by Beastie Boys.
Brad tried to convince me we had all the reasons to party & it was worth celebrating, "We owe it to ourselves," I can remember him telling me. It was 2:00 am & I declined, falling asleep, Brad left to go walk on the beach with Lou Dog. When I woke up the next morning, I saw my best friend, naked, laying on the bed with his feet on the floor. I remember laughing, thinking he had gotten so drunk the night before he couldn't make it into bed, but when I got no response from him I got up to see what was going on, and that's when the world came to a screeching halt. I tried to resuscitate him, but he had been dead for hours. I began crying out loud for help, ran down stairs & down the road looking for the rest of the guys. This was the worse news I ever had to deliver in my life. After being interviewed by the police I was told by the EMTs that he had been gone for hours and there was nothing I could do. This was the longest bus ride of all of our lives."
